I have always had a fascination for intricacy and detail and found that my passion was creating jewellery with a retrospective theme. Narrative has always featured in my work, and I have recently discovered a special interest in Victorian Mourning Jewellery. I am intrigued by its focus on sentiment and secrecy. My latest collection of work has been inspired by this, combined with historical references from the Tudor period.
I am moved by the notion of capturing a fleeting memory, from dream or reality, and preserving the beauty of its existence in time. Like evoking faded memories, these diverse elements from the past merge to create unique pieces of jewellery, each with its own individual story.
I work in silver, often combining materials such as paper, text, symbols and found objects. Processes such as photo etching allow me to portray my own interpretation of these recalled Victorian qualities of sentiment and attachment. By altering the original purpose of an object, or a surface, I give it a new meaning while respecting and appreciating its origins.
